Sakaja’s Dishi na County Staff Protest Over Unpaid Salaries in Nairobi CBD

Employees of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s “Dishi na County” initiative staged a protest in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) due to unpaid salaries. The demonstration involved staff members expressing their dissatisfaction over delayed payments, leading to disruptions in the city center.

This protest follows a series of concerning developments within the Nairobi City County Government. An audit report released on February 27, 2025, revealed that 3,834 staff members were hired without public advertisements, raising questions about the transparency of the recruitment process. Additionally, the report highlighted inconsistencies in salary disbursements, with some employees experiencing multiple salary adjustments within a single year.

Compounding these issues, the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) disconnected power to several county facilities on February 14, 2025, due to an outstanding electricity bill of Sh3 billion. This action further strained the county’s operations and services.
