Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns Midfielder Jayden Adams Dies Weeks After 2026 FIFA World Cup

South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The talented midfielder featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches as Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32, marking the nation’s best FIFA World Cup campaign in years. His passing has brought a heartbreaking end to the career of one of South Africa’s most promising footballers.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed on Saturday in a statement by South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who described Adams as a player whose talent, humility and professionalism inspired many across the nation.

Adams began his football journey in the youth ranks of Stellenbosch FC before becoming the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract in 2020. His rapid development saw him establish himself as one of the Betway Premiership’s finest midfielders, making 139 appearances and playing a pivotal role in Stellenbosch’s historic 2023 Carling Knockout triumph.

His outstanding performances earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he continued to flourish. During his spell with the Tshwane giants, Adams helped the club win the Betway Premiership title and the CAF Champions League, cementing his place among the country’s elite players.

Mamelodi Sundowns confirmed Adams’ passing in an official statement on Saturday, saying the club was

“devastated by the tragic passing of Jayden Adams.”

The reigning South African champions described the 25-year-old as a highly talented Bafana Bafana midfielder and said the Motsepe family, board of directors, technical team, players, management, staff, supporters and the entire Yellow Nation extended their deepest condolences to his family and friends. The club also prayed for strength and comfort for the Adams family during the difficult period and appealed to the public to respect their privacy as they grieve.

On the international stage, Adams developed into a key figure for Bafana Bafana. He was instrumental in South Africa’s third-place finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations before earning a place in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His energetic displays in midfield were vital as South Africa progressed to the Round of 32, where they bowed out to Canada.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” Minister McKenzie said while leading tributes to the midfielder.

The minister also revealed that Adams displayed remarkable courage during the World Cup after learning that his grandmother had died just hours before South Africa’s match against Czechia, yet he still chose to represent his country. The gesture, McKenzie said, reflected the midfielder’s unwavering commitment to the national team.

While speculation has emerged surrounding his death, the South African government appealed for patience and respect, stressing that no official cause has been confirmed.

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed,” McKenzie said, urging the public and media to respect the privacy of the player’s family during this difficult period.

Adams leaves behind a young daughter, grieving family, teammates and millions of supporters who watched him rise from a gifted academy graduate to a Bafana Bafana regular and FIFA World Cup midfielder. His legacy will be remembered for his talent, resilience and dedication to South African football.
