Gor Mahia Semi-Final Hopes Suffer Blow After Late Vipers Defeat

Gor Mahia’s hopes of securing an early place in the semi-finals of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup suffered a major setback after a dramatic 1-0 defeat to Uganda’s Vipers SC at Pele Stadium in Kigali on Monday.

Just two days after announcing themselves as tournament favourites with a commanding 5-0 victory over hosts APR FC, K’Ogalo were brought back down to earth by a disciplined Vipers side that snatched victory deep into stoppage time.

The decisive moment came in the 90+2nd minute when substitute Gusto Mulongo rose to head home Ashraf Mandela’s inviting cross, sealing Vipers’ second consecutive victory and putting the Ugandan champions on the verge of the semi-finals.

For Gor Mahia, however, the defeat leaves qualification hanging in the balance, with their fate now likely to depend on other results as well as a positive outcome in their final group match.

Head coach Charles Akonnor made a bold selection call by overhauling the side that dismantled APR FC. The Ghanaian made nine changes to his starting line-up, retaining only defenders Mike Kibwage and Frank Odhiambo from the team that won 5-0 on Friday.

Despite the changes, Gor Mahia began brightly and controlled much of the opening exchanges. Their crisp passing and movement caused Vipers problems during the opening 15 minutes, but they failed to convert their dominance into clear-cut chances against a well-organised Ugandan defence.

Vipers gradually settled into the contest and began creating openings of their own. In the 18th minute, Yunus Sentamu beat his marker down the left wing but failed to pick out a teammate with his final delivery.

Moments later, Uganda Cranes midfielder Farouk Miya produced a dangerous cross into the box, only for Ebenezer Ocran to make a crucial block and deny Hillary Mukundane.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both sides battling for control in midfield but struggling to create clear scoring opportunities.

Vipers nearly broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Sentamu slipped Miya through on goal, but the midfielder’s effort drifted narrowly wide.

Searching for a breakthrough, Akonnor made a quadruple substitution in the 61st minute, introducing Shariff Musa, Paul Okoth, Lesley Otieno and Samuel Kapen for Ebenezer Adukwaw, Hansel Ochieng, George Amonno and Ben Stanley.

Vipers coach Denis Lavagne also turned to his bench, bringing on Gusto Mulongo, Odili Chukuwama and Usama Arafat, substitutions that would ultimately prove decisive.

The Ugandan champions threatened again in the 75th minute when Hillary Mukundane headed wide from Chukuwama’s cross before finally finding the breakthrough in stoppage time.

Ashraf Mandela delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area where Mulongo rose highest to direct his header beyond goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi, silencing the Gor Mahia supporters and handing Vipers a priceless victory.

The defeat leaves Gor Mahia’s semi-final hopes hanging by a thread just two days after their emphatic victory over APR FC had established them as early favourites for the regional crown. K’Ogalo must now beat Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine in their final Group A match and hope other results go their way to keep their campaign alive.

Akonnor’s decision to make nine changes to the side that thrashed APR quickly became the biggest talking point after the final whistle. The coach, however, defended his squad rotation, insisting the tournament is also an opportunity to evaluate his expanded squad ahead of the new season.
