End of an Era: Gor Mahia Part Ways with 9 Players in Major Squad Overhaul

Gor Mahia have begun a major squad rebuild ahead of the 2026/27 season after confirming the departure of 8 players and still counting…

The exits signal the end of an era for K’Ogalo, with several long-serving and experienced players leaving as the record Kenyan champions reshape their squad for the upcoming SportPesa League campaign and the CAF Champions League.

At the end of the 2025/26 season, only two departures had initially been confirmed. Veteran captain Philemon Otieno and experienced defensive midfielder Ernest Wendo were given a fitting send-off by the club after years of distinguished service.

The duo left as two of the most decorated players in Gor Mahia’s illustrious history. Wendo bowed out after winning an incredible 8 League titles in his 11 year stay at the club, the most by any player in the club’s history and even the League, while Philemon ended his remarkable 9-year stay with 7 League crowns, having captained K’Ogalo through one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

However, the list of departures continued to grow. Reigning SportPesa League Most Valuable Player and Gor Mahia Player of the Season Enoch Morrison opted against renewing his contract and completed a move to Sudanese giants El Merrikh, dealing a significant blow to the club after an outstanding campaign. The Ghanaian midfielder had established himself as one of the league’s standout performers and played a pivotal role in Gor Mahia’s title-winning season.

The club has since confirmed the exits of 6 more players, bringing the total number of departures to 9. Those leaving include assistant captain Geoffrey Ochieng ‘Simiti’, goalkeeper Gad Mathews, strikers Chris Ochieng and Byson Wangai, left-back Levin Ochieng, midfielder Fidel Origa, alongside Philemon Otieno, Ernest Wendo and Enoch Morrison.

Several of the departing players took to social media to bid emotional farewells to the club and its supporters.

After eight memorable years in green, assistant captain Geoffrey Ochieng described Gor Mahia as one of the greatest chapters of his football career. He thanked the club’s management, coaches, teammates, staff and supporters for their unwavering support, saying serving as assistant captain was a privilege that shaped him both as a footballer and as a person. Ochieng added that although he was leaving in search of a new challenge, Gor Mahia would always hold a special place in his heart, signing off with the words, “Once K’Ogalo, always K’Ogalo.”

Goalkeeper Gad Mathews also ended his seven-year stay with an emotional message, saying he

“Came in as a boy but left as a man.”

The shot-stopper thanked the club for giving him a home and expressed gratitude to the supporters for making him feel part of the Gor Mahia family throughout his stay.

The club also paid tribute to midfielder Fidel Origa, who joined Gor Mahia at the beginning of the just-concluded season. In a statement, Gor Mahia said they had reached a mutual agreement with the midfielder to part ways, thanking him for his service and wishing him success in the next chapter of his career.

Despite the mass departures, Gor Mahia have already begun strengthening the squad. The record champions have secured the signing of prolific striker Paul Okoth from Ulinzi Stars after a sensational 2025/26 SportPesa League campaign in which he scored 18 league goals to finish as the division’s Golden Boot winner. His arrival is expected to significantly boost K’Ogalo’s attacking options ahead of the new season.
