The Atlas Lions Roar Into World Cup Quarter-finals

Morocco’s dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup shows no signs of slowing down. The Atlas Lions produced another commanding display to defeat tournament hosts Canada 3-0 in Houston, booking their place in the quarter-finals and continuing to proudly fly the CAF flag on the global stage.

Having reached the semi-finals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Morocco arrived at this tournament carrying the hopes of an entire continent. They have lived up to those expectations, progressing unbeaten through the group stage before eliminating the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout. Against Canada, they delivered arguably their most complete performance yet.

The Round of 16 clash began with Canada enjoying the brighter start. Backed by a passionate home crowd, the hosts pressed aggressively from the opening whistle and almost grabbed an early lead, only for goalkeeper Bono to produce a magnificent save to deny Tani Oluwaseyi in the 10th minute.

Morocco gradually settled into the contest and began to threaten on the counterattack, although they suffered an early setback when influential midfielder Ismael Saibari was forced off through injury after just 21 minutes. Soufiane Rahimi replaced him as Mohamed Ouahbi reshuffled his attacking options.

The first half was fiercely contested, with several heavy tackles and five yellow cards reflecting the intensity of the occasion. Despite both teams creating opportunities, neither side could find the breakthrough before halftime.

Morocco emerged from the dressing room with renewed purpose and finally broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half. A brilliantly rehearsed free-kick routine caught the Canadian defence by surprise as Achraf Hakimi rolled the ball into the path of Azzedine Ounahi, whose stunning right-footed strike from outside the box flew into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Morocco’s favour. Canada pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser, but the Atlas Lions remained disciplined defensively while looking increasingly dangerous on the counterattack.

Their patience paid off again in the 82nd minute. A swift break led by Ilias Akhomach released Ounahi through on goal, and the midfielder calmly fired home his second goal of the evening to put Morocco firmly in control at 2-0.

With Canada committing everyone forward during eight minutes of stoppage time, Morocco delivered the final blow. Brahim Díaz orchestrated a devastating counterattack before sliding a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Soufiane Rahimi, who kept his composure to slot home the third goal and complete a convincing 3-0 victory.

The final whistle confirmed another historic achievement for the Atlas Lions, who remain unbeaten in the tournament after drawing with Brazil, defeating Scotland, overcoming the Netherlands on penalties and now comfortably dispatching the World Cup hosts.

Morocco’s balance of defensive organisation, tactical discipline and clinical finishing continues to make them one of the standout teams of the tournament. Once again, they have become Africa’s standard-bearers on football’s biggest stage, carrying CAF’s hopes into the last eight.

The victory also keeps alive Morocco’s ambition of matching or even surpassing the historic run that saw them become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in Qatar four years ago. With confidence soaring and momentum firmly behind them, the Atlas Lions head into the quarter-finals believing they can write yet another unforgettable chapter in African football history.
