The Kenya Sevens’ hopes of securing a place in the 2026/27 HSBC SVNS top tier division were officially ended after a disappointing outing at the SVNS World Championship in Bordeaux, France.
After strong performances in Valladolid and Hong Kong, Shujaa arrived in Bordeaux needing just a quarter-final finish to secure promotion. However, their campaign fell apart at the crucial stage, going winless in the pool phase before struggling in the classification matches, ultimately missing out on a top-eight finish.
Kenya began their Pool A campaign with a 31–12 loss to Fiji, followed by a 26–5 defeat to South Africa and a 14–5 loss to Great Britain. The three consecutive defeats left Shujaa bottom of their pool and out of contention for the Cup quarter-finals, effectively ending their direct promotion hopes early in the tournament.
In the playoffs stage, things did not improve significantly. Kenya suffered a narrow 7–5 defeat to Germany in the 9th-place semifinal, a result that confirmed they would miss out on the crucial ranking positions needed for SVNS 1 qualification. They later closed their campaign with a 26–7 victory over Uruguay in the 11th-place playoff, a result that offered some consolation but did little to change their final standing.
Shujaa were also forced to rely on other results going their way, particularly the 5th place payoffs match between Fiji and the USA. Fiji appeared to be in control after racing to a 14–0 lead, but the USA produced a dramatic comeback to win 17–14, scoring a decisive try after the hooter. That result saw the Americans leapfrog Kenya by a single point, pushing Shujaa down to 9th place overall with 16 points.

The USA’s victory proved decisive in the promotion race, as their top-eight finish secured them a place in the SVNS league phase for the 2026/27 season. They will now compete in the opening six tournaments of the campaign, including Dubai, Cape Town, Perth, Vancouver, New York and Singapore, before advancing to the SVNS World Championship.
For Kenya, the outcome means another season in SVNS 2 as they continue their search for a return to the top tier. Having been relegated from the World Series in May 2023, Shujaa once again fell short at a key moment, despite showing promise earlier in the season.
Ultimately, it was a campaign defined by missed chances. Kenya had the opportunity to secure promotion but failed to deliver when it mattered most, with early pool defeats in Bordeaux proving too costly. While the USA capitalized on their momentum to earn promotion, Shujaa are left to reflect, rebuild, and prepare for another push next season.
