Exclusive: FKF Orders Mara Sugar vs Gor Mahia Match to Be Played in Homabay

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has rejected Mara Sugar FC’s request to move their FKF Premier League clash against Gor Mahia to Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea, instead directing that the fixture be played at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay.

Letters exclusively obtained by LTN Sports reveal that FKF’s Leagues & Competitions Committee declined the request after finding that the proposed venue change failed to comply with the federation’s competition regulations governing registered home and alternative venues.

In a letter dated 21 May 2026, FKF’s Leagues & Competitions Committee informed Mara Sugar that the proposed venue change failed to comply with the federation’s competition regulations governing registered home and alternative venues.

FKF cited Rule 18 of the FKF Rules & Regulations Governing Kenyan Football (2025), which requires clubs to register a primary home venue alongside alternative venues located, where practical, within the same zone and not more than 200 kilometres from the main venue. The federation also referenced Rule 3.1.5 of the 2019 regulations, which bars clubs from relocating matches without prior written approval from FKF.

Documents submitted by Mara Sugar FC for the 2025/2026 season show that the club officially registered Green Stadium in Awendo as its primary home venue, Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay as the first alternative venue, and Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo as the second alternative venue.

The venue registration form referenced by FKF confirms the same list of approved grounds for the current campaign.FKF noted that Wang’uru Stadium was neither registered by Mara Sugar as an alternative venue nor located within the permissible distance from the club’s primary home ground. The committee consequently declined the request to stage the match in Mwea.

The federation has now confirmed that Match No. 293 between Mara Sugar FC and Gor Mahia FC will be played on Sunday, 24 May 2026, at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay, with kick-off set for 2:00 PM.

FKF stated that the decision was made “in the interest of the game and in upholding the Competitions’ Rules & Regulations.”The correspondence was copied to FKF officials, Gor Mahia FC chairman, the referees department, security officials, and broadcast partners.
