The curtains have officially risen on the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association National Championships, with Kisumu playing host to one of the country’s biggest school sporting spectacles. Over 6,000 participants have descended on the lakeside city, transforming it into a vibrant hub of competition and youthful energy.
The championship has drawn top secondary school teams from across the country, all battling for national honors in rugby, hockey, basketball, handball, athletics, and swimming, underlining the tournament’s importance in shaping Kenya’s next generation of sporting talent.
The official opening ceremony was held at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, where Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok joined KSSSA officials to officially flag off the games.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Bitok issued a stern warning on integrity in school sports, revealing that the Ministry of Education will intensify its crackdown on age cheating and doping during the championships. He cautioned that teachers found facilitating such malpractices risk disciplinary action through the Teachers Service Commission, emphasizing that such practices undermine fairness and the credibility of school competitions.
On the courts and fields, the competition structure is now fully set, with pools drawn across multiple disciplines.
