Kasarani Stadium has officially been closed as Kenya steps up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
In a letter dated February 6, 2026 and addressed to all sports federations, Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo confirmed that Phase II upgrading works at the Moi International Sports Centre will commence this month. The contractor is set to move on site to complete the remaining renovations required to align the facility with CAF standards ahead of the continental showpiece.

The closure affects both the main stadium and its annexes, with federations directed to relocate scheduled events to alternative venues. The move marks a significant phase in Kenya’s infrastructure modernization plan as the country prepares to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside its regional partners.
The immediate impact is already being felt in domestic football ,even before a ball is kicked in Round 20.
FKF SportPesa Premier League matches scheduled for February 13–15, 2026 will now be played under unusual logistical circumstances, with several Nairobi-based clubs forced to seek alternative home grounds outside the capital. With Kasarani shut and Nyayo Stadium unavailable due to the HSBC 2 Rugby tournament this weekend, viable venues within Nairobi have become extremely limited.
Bidco United will welcome Kakamega Homeboyz at SportPesa Arena in Murang’a, while Posta Rangers have shifted their clash against Shabana to Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea, Kirinyaga. Sofapaka will host Murang’a Seals at Vapor Grounds, marking the first time the venue will stage a top-tier league match. Police Sacco Stadium remains the only approved top-flight venue currently available within Nairobi and is set to host multiple matches across the weekend, stretching scheduling flexibility as clubs scramble for space.
