A dramatic opening weekend of the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup delivered early shocks, surprise exits and emphatic statements as the Round of 64 lived up to its reputation as the most unforgiving stage of the competition.
The biggest headline came on Sunday afternoon where SportPesa League title chasers AFC Leopards saw their cup ambitions brought to a sudden halt by Nairobi East Regional League side BB Bread. Playing at the Police Sacco Stadium, Ingwe were held to a 2–2 draw before falling 4–3 in a tense penalty shootout, becoming the first top-flight side to exit this year’s tournament.
BB Bread announced their intent early and made full use of set pieces to unsettle their more fancied opponents. A dangerous corner forced defender Fredrick Alushula into an own goal that handed the regional outfit the lead, and another well-worked corner just before the half-hour mark saw Joseph Tindo rise above the defence to head in a second. Despite changes from coach Fred Ambani aimed at restoring control and creativity, AFC Leopards went into the break trailing.

Ingwe responded after the restart with renewed urgency. Kennedy Owino pulled one back in a crowded box before substitute James Kinyanjui drove through the middle late on to restore parity and force penalties. The shootout swung back and forth until Tindo converted BB Bread’s final kick, leaving Samuel Semo needing to score to keep AFC Leopards alive. His effort sailed over the bar, sparking celebrations from the minnows and ending Leopards’ hopes of a domestic double.
AFC Leopards were not the only high-profile casualties of the round. Mara Sugar, last season’s semi finalists, were also knocked out after a dramatic 3–3 draw against Wisdom Soccer, with the lower-tier side prevailing 4–3 on penalties to book a famous place in the Round of 32.

There was further disappointment for National Super League promotion chasers MOFA, who were stunned 1–0 by FKF Conference League outfit Muhoroni Youth. The narrow defeat underlined the unpredictable nature of the competition and reinforced the growing belief that pedigree offers no guarantees once the cup gets underway.
While some fell, others laid down clear markers. Last season’s finalists Gor Mahia began their campaign with a composed 2–0 victory at Jomo kenyatta stadium , Mamboleo Kisumu against Dero, navigating a tricky tie to move safely into the next round. Tusker were also made to work hard before edging Mwea United 3–2, while Bandari cruised past Githurai AllStars with a comfortable 3–0 win.

Across the two days, the goals flowed freely in several encounters. Murang’a Seal ran riot in a 9–1 demolition of Kahawa Pride, 3K overwhelmed Limuru 8–0 and Kariobangi Sharks were ruthless in a 7–0 victory over Pwani Oil. Kakamega Homeboyz, Ulinzi Stars, Kenya Police, Posta Rangers, Shabana, Bidco United and KCB all advanced with solid wins, while Kibera Black Stars and Gucha Youth also needed penalties to progress after hard-fought draws.
