Goalkeeper errors and late twists took center stage as a dramatic midweek round 14 of SportPesa League matches unfolded from Tuesday to Thursday, producing shock results, momentum shifts, and yet another reshuffle at the top of the table.
The gameweek opened quietly on Tuesday lunchtime with Posta Rangers hosting Bandari. Fresh from holding Gor Mahia in Mombasa, Bandari once again showed resilience on the road as Razak Siwa’s side settled for a second straight stalemate, the goalless draw earning them another valuable point. Later in the day at Kasarani, chaos reigned as KCB survived a major scare against APS Bomet. The visitors stunned the Bankers by twice taking the lead through Philip Wasai, but KCB responded emphatically, rallying to a 4–2 win inspired by a hat-trick from Kelvin Etemesi. That victory briefly pushed the Bankers to the summit as attention turned to Wednesday’s fixtures.

Wednesday lunchtime at Gusii Stadium offered little relief for Shabana supporters as their struggles at home continued. Neighbours Mara Sugar matched them stride for stride in a tight, disciplined encounter that ended goalless, with both sides producing a defensive masterclass but little going forward. The real talking point of the day came later in Murang’a, where Tusker squandered a golden chance to go top. Charles Okere’s side fell 1–0 at home to Nairobi United, Kevin Otiende striking early in the 10th minute. The result provided a timely boost for the CAF Confederation Cup representatives, easing pressure that had begun to mount on head coach Nicholas Muyoti.
Elsewhere, Mathare United deepened Sofapaka’s woes at a time when the club was already reeling from boardroom upheaval. Days after goalkeeper coach Wilson Oburu was dismissed and replaced by former Harambee Stars trainer Fredrick “Jerry” Onyango, Sofapaka slipped to another narrow defeat. Dennis Okoth’s well-taken strike, following a fine assist from John Nyawir, handed Mathare a 1–0 win and left “Batoto Ba Mungu” second from bottom, firmly entrenched in the relegation zone.
The day closed with Gor Mahia finally halting their slide. After back-to-back defeats and a frustrating draw away to Bandari, the record champions returned to winning ways and reclaimed top spot. Alpha Onyango struck in the 17th minute, firing home after a corner was headed into his path by Mike Kibwage. The contest was cagey and tactical, with few clear chances, but Gor Mahia defended grimly to see out the win and move two points clear of a tightly packed chasing group of five teams level on points.

Thursday brought renewed hope for relegation candidates as Kariobangi Sharks secured only their second win of the season. Having endured a miserable start that yielded just one victory in 14 outings, the Slum Boys ground out a crucial 1–0 win over Bidco. Aroko’s 79th-minute strike stunned the visitors and handed Sharks a lifeline as they attempt to climb out of the red zone.
The biggest shock of the round, however, came once again in Murang’a. Defending champions Police FC arrived hoping to unseat league leaders Gor Mahia but instead fell to Murang’a Seals. Just as they had done last season, the home side frustrated Police, this time making it count. Joe Wathera, fondly known as “King Joe,” struck in the 15th minute after being set up by Francis Memusi. Seals then defended doggedly for the remainder of the match, earning a priceless three points that lifted them out of the relegation zone. For Police, the defeat was another setback in their title defence, dropping them to fourth but still just two points off the summit.
The round concluded at the Ulinzi Sports Complex with a match defined by costly goalkeeping errors. AFC Leopards edged Ulinzi Stars 2–1 in a contest that left the spotlight firmly on the Ulinzi goalkeeper. Ingwe took the lead just before halftime when a Samwel Semo free kick caused confusion, Tyson Otieno’s effort slipping through Timothy Odhiambo’s hands.

Ulinzi responded strongly after the break and deservedly equalised through Paul Okoth’s header from Telena Ochieng’s delivery. But in the dying moments, another misjudgment proved decisive as Odhiambo rushed off his line, allowing Vincent “Aguero” Otieno to calmly lift the ball over him and seal the win for Leopards. The victory pushed Ingwe up to third on the table, while the goalkeeping howlers left Ulinzi’s technical bench with serious questions to answer.
At the end of an eventful round, the SportPesa League standings reflect just how tight the race has become at both ends of the table.
