AFC Leopards sent out a powerful reminder of their title intentions with a commanding 5-1 victory over Shabana FC in a dramatic SportPesa League encounter played at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, March 1. It was an evening that blended high quality football, raw emotion, and moments of chaos, yet Ingwe emerged emphatically, trimming the gap on the leaders and reigniting belief within their camp.
Coming into the match, the pressure was squarely on AFC Leopards. A midweek defeat to KCB had stalled their momentum and allowed league leaders Gor Mahia to extend their advantage at the top to nine points. Facing fellow title challengers Shabana FC, who sat third on the table, anything less than a win would have further damaged their hopes of ending a 30-year league title drought. What followed, however, was a statement performance.
Inside Nyayo stadium pulsed with energy, a sea of red ,white and blue as passionate fans of AFC Leopards and Shabana FC packed the stands, turning the match into one of the weekend’s most electrifying spectacles, It was Shabana who showed early intent. Inside the opening minutes, Assis Batsi tested James Ssetuba with a fierce effort, forcing the Leopards goalkeeper into a sharp save as the visitors signaled they had not come to sit back. The opening exchanges were tense and cautious, with both sides aware of the stakes attached to the contest.

Ingwe eventually broke the deadlock in the 17th minute through a well-rehearsed set-piece. Tyson Otieno and James Kinyanjui combined cleverly from a free kick on the left, releasing Samuel Semo inside the area. The winger showed composure beyond his years, guiding a left-footed finish past the goalkeeper to lift the home side.
That goal shifted the balance. Leopards began to assert themselves, circulating the ball with confidence and limiting Shabana’s attacking outlets. Just as the visitors looked to regroup before the interval, they were undone again. Ronald Sichenje surged down the left flank late in the half and delivered a teasing cross that Tyson Otieno met with a calm, low finish, sending Ingwe into the break with a deserved two-goal cushion.
The second half opened with renewed urgency from Shabana, who briefly thought they had pulled one back through Brian Michira, only for the assistant’s flag to halt their celebrations. Leopards continued to threaten on the counter, with Kinyanjui and Otieno finding space, but a third goal initially proved elusive.

Shabana’s persistence finally paid off shortly after the hour mark. A well-delivered corner caused confusion in the box, and Wycliffe Omondi reacted quickest to steer the ball home, injecting fresh tension into the contest and raising hopes of a comeback.
Those hopes, however, were short-lived. A costly defensive error moments later handed Ingwe breathing space once more. Goalkeeper Stephen Ochieng’s misplaced pass was pounced upon by substitute Samuel Ssenyonjo, who showed sharp awareness to slot the ball into the corner and restore the two-goal advantage.
Soon after, the match was overshadowed by unrest in the stands. Tensions that had been building both outside and inside the stadium earlier in the evening spilled over, forcing police intervention and an extended stoppage as teargas was deployed to restore order. Play resumed after an 11-minute pause, with both teams refocusing amid an uneasy atmosphere.
Once the game restarted, Leopards showed no mercy. From a corner, Tyson Otieno teed up Kayci Odhiambo on the edge of the box, and the midfielder unleashed a thunderous strike that flew into the net, effectively ending the contest. The rout was completed late on when Sichenje once again turned provider, slipping in Ssenyonjo for his second goal of the night, sealing a dominant 5-1 scoreline.
The win meant , the lead at the summit is down to 6 points , as Ingwe continue to pile pressure on Leaders Gor Mahia.
