Kenya’s basketball season is heading towards another familiar climax, with Nairobi City Thunder and Kenya Ports Authority set to meet in the KBF Men’s League Finals for the third consecutive year.
Thunder have reached the championship series after disposing of Stanbic Shields in three straight games, while KPA produced a similar result against Equity Dumas. The two finalists have now separated themselves from the rest of the field and will renew a rivalry that has defined the league’s title race in recent seasons.
Thunder, the reigning champions, remain unbeaten since 2023 and are chasing a third successive championship under American coach Brad Ibs. Their latest playoff run saw them overcome Shields 88-65 in Game Three at Nyayo Gymnasium, following earlier victories of 82-65 and 91-67.
Another championship would place Thunder among the select group of Kenyan clubs that have won the league at least three times consecutively. KPA, Ulinzi Warriors, KCB Lions and Co-op Bank have previously achieved that feat.
Standing in their way is a KPA side determined to restore itself to the top of Kenyan basketball. The Mombasa club last lifted the league crown in 2023 and has since watched Thunder take control of the championship.
Robert Mugabe’s charges reached the finals with a commanding 82-56 victory over Equity Dumas, completing a semifinal sweep after wins of 87-56 and 102-87 in the opening two games.
KPA will also carry the memory of the previous two finals into this series. Thunder won both championship encounters 3-0, leaving the Mombasa side without a victory in a best-of-five finals series against their Nairobi rivals.
The opening weekend could therefore prove crucial. KPA will host the first two games at the Makande Gymnasium, giving them an opportunity to establish an early advantage before the series heads to Nairobi.
Game One is scheduled for Saturday, September 26 at 6pm, with the second meeting following at the same venue and time on Sunday. Game Three will be played at Nyayo Gymnasium on Friday, October 2 at 8pm.
The Kenya National Basketball League (KNBL) champion is decided through a round-robin regular season followed by a structured knockout playoff tournament. At the end of the regular season, the top-performing teams qualify for the postseason based on their win-loss records, which also determines their seeding. These teams advance through elimination rounds, including the quarterfinals and semifinals, which typically use a multi-game series format where the higher-seeded team holds home-court advantage. The tournament culminates in a best-of-five final series between the last two remaining teams. The first team to win three games in this final matchup is officially crowned the KNBL champion.
With Thunder pursuing another chapter in their unbeaten reign and KPA seeking to reclaim the crown, the latest edition of this rivalry comes with history, revenge and silverware all at stake.
