More than three months after his controversial dismissal, veteran coach Gilbert Selebwa has been unveiled as the new head coach of MOFA FC ahead of the 2026/27 FKF National Super League season.
The appointment ends speculation over Selebwa’s next destination following his abrupt exit from Mombasa United, where he had transformed the club from relegation candidates into National Super League title contenders before being dismissed amid reported internal wrangles.
In a statement, MOFA FC confirmed that the experienced tactician will lead the Homa Bay County-based side as it intensifies preparations for another push for promotion to the Sportpesa League.
“Michael Olunga Football Academy Football Club (MOFA FC) has appointed experienced tactician Gilbert Selebwa as its new Head Coach ahead of the 2026/27 FKF National Super League season,” the club said.
Selebwa joins MOFA FC with a wealth of experience and a CAF A Coaching Licence. He has built a strong reputation in Kenyan football, particularly in the second tier, having guided both AFC Leopards and Shabana FC to promotion to the FKF Premier League. He is especially remembered for returning AFC Leopards to the top flight in 2009.
His appointment follows an impressive campaign in which he inherited a side that had narrowly escaped relegation after finishing 16th in the 2024/25 FKF National Super League with 37 points and transformed it into genuine promotion contenders. By the time of his dismissal in April, the team had climbed to the top end of the table and was firmly on course to challenge for promotion.
MOFA FC will be hoping Selebwa can replicate that success as the club prepares for another National Super League campaign. The Homa Bay County outfit finished fifth last season and will be targeting promotion on their third attempt.
Founded by Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, MOFA FC is based in Othoro, Homa Bay County, and is committed to developing young footballers through a model that combines elite football training with education and character development.
Selebwa replaces Charles Bruno, who was relieved of his duties towards the end of last season.
The appointment underlines MOFA FC’s determination to secure promotion to the Sportpesa League, with the club placing its faith in one of Kenya’s most experienced promotion-winning coaches.
