Kilifi County Unveils Major Tax Relief to Boost Local Economy

Kilifi County Governor Gideon Mung’aro has announced a significant temporary tax relief aimed at alleviating the financial burdens of local businesses and property owners. This move is part of the county’s broader strategy to stimulate economic recovery and enhance service delivery.

Governor Mung’aro revealed that landowners owe the county approximately KES 30 billion in unpaid land rates and accrued interest. To address this, he has introduced a 50% waiver on land rates and penalties for a 30-day period. The governor emphasized that failure to settle these dues within the stipulated time would result in legal action, including potential land repossession.

In addition to the land rate waivers, the county has declared full waivers on single business permits and other property-related taxes. This comprehensive tax relief is designed to ease the financial strain on local enterprises, encouraging compliance and fostering a more conducive business environment.

Governor Mung’aro highlighted that the funds recovered from these initiatives would be reinvested into key development projects, including improved healthcare, infrastructure, and educational facilities, thereby directly benefiting the residents of Kilifi County.
