Kenya Morans Storm Into Mauritius Sevens Final After Blanking South Africa

Kenya Morans produced a statement performance in the Cup semi-final on Sunday, shutting out South Africa 15-0 to book their place in the final of the 2026 Africa Men’s Sevens Series tournament in Mauritius.

The emphatic victory marked a strong response from Kenya following a mixed pool-stage campaign and put the Morans within one match of lifting the Mauritius title.

Kenya opened their campaign with a 34-12 victory over Namibia, before making it two wins from two with a 19-0 triumph over Réunion. Their perfect start was halted in the final pool match when Madagascar handed them a 26-0 defeat, leaving the Morans second in Pool B and setting up a semi-final meeting with South Africa.

Against the Blitzboks, however, Kenya produced a much sharper display.

The Morans took control from the opening whistle and applied pressure on South Africa, with Strathmore Leos star Gabriel Ayimba breaking the deadlock to give Kenya the lead.

His Strathmore Leos teammate Victor Odhiambo Mola then added a second try before halftime as Kenya continued to trouble the Blitzboks. The two players have been central to what has been a memorable tournament for Strathmore Leos, with their attacking contribution providing another reminder of the club’s growing influence on the national sevens setup.

A third try eventually completed the rout, with captain Elvis Olukusi playing a key role in the move after powering through the South African defence before producing a crucial offload to keep the attack alive for Gabriel Ayimba to grab his second try & seal the the 15-0 victory .

Kenya’s defence stood firm for the remainder of the match to complete a clean sheet and send the Morans into the final in convincing fashion.

The victory provides a significant confidence boost for Kevin Wambua’s charges, particularly after the difficult encounter with Madagascar in the pool stage. The Morans will now get an opportunity to respond against the same opponents when they return to action in the final at 2:11pm EAT.

Madagascar booked the other final berth after defeating Burkina Faso 26-14 in the second semi-final. The Makis have remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and will enter the final with confidence after their earlier 26-0 victory over Kenya.

The Strathmore Leos connection has been one of the notable stories of Kenya’s campaign, with Ayimba and Mola playing decisive roles in the semi-final. Their performances have added further excitement for the club’s supporters as Kenya prepares for the biggest match of the Mauritius assignment.

With Madagascar standing between Kenya and the Mauritius title, the Morans will be hoping their dominant semi-final display is the springboard they need to finish the tournament on top.
