Kenya Finishes Second at African Athletics Championships

Team Kenya delivered a strong performance at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, finishing second overall with 17 medals. Kenya collected six gold, four silver, and seven bronze medals to trail only South Africa, which topped the standings with 20 medals, while Ethiopia settled for third place.

The championships at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium were affected by logistical challenges, including power outages, schedule interruptions, accommodation concerns, and difficult weather conditions. Despite the setbacks, Kenyan athletes remained focused and produced impressive performances across both track and field events.

Kelvin Chesang gave Kenya an early boost by winning gold in the men’s 10,000m, while Diana Wanza dominated the women’s 10,000m race to secure another title for the country. Kelvin Kimutai Loti also impressed after storming to victory in the men’s 800m.

Veteran javelin thrower Julius Yego once again showcased his class by winning gold with a season-best throw of 79.87m. Kenya also maintained its dominance in the steeplechase as Diana Chepkemoi led a Kenyan one-two finish in the women’s 3000m steeplechase ahead of Mercy Chepngeno Koskey.

The country also registered encouraging results in field events, with Belinda Oburu Adhiambo, Asbel Kiprop Kemboi, and Isaac Ndute Kimunu all winning bronze medals in their respective disciplines. Kenya’s relay teams rounded off the championships strongly with medals in the men’s, women’s, and mixed 4x400m relay events.
