Fresh from captaining Kakamega High School to the 2026 KSSSA national boys’ football title, Fidel Odhiambo is embarking on an exciting new chapter after securing a football scholarship to Montverde Academy in Florida, United States.

The commanding central defender leaves Kenya on the back of a memorable championship campaign in which he played a pivotal role in guiding the Green Commandos back to the summit of Kenyan school football. Kakamega defeated St. Mary’s School Yala 3-2 after extra time in a thrilling final at M-PESA Foundation Academy, Thika, ending an eight-year wait for the national crown.

For Odhiambo, lifting the trophy as captain was a fitting conclusion to his secondary school career, but his individual contribution made the achievement even more special. He was one of the standout performers throughout the tournament, providing leadership and defensive authority while also making a decisive impact in attack.

The captain registered two assists during the national championship, setting up the winning goals in both of Kakamega’s knockout victories. His delivery contributed to the decisive goal against Menengai High School in the semi-final, before he again played a crucial role in the final against Yala, assisting the goal that ultimately secured Kakamega’s dramatic comeback.

His performance in the showpiece earned him the Man of the Match award, capping a tournament in which he demonstrated the maturity, composure and tactical awareness expected of a player operating at the heart of a championship-winning defence.

Fidel’s leadership was particularly important as Kakamega returned to the national stage after an eight-year absence. The Green Commandos went on to reclaim the title and extend their remarkable KSSSA football championship tally to 15, further cementing their status as the most successful school in Kenyan football.

Barely had the celebrations settled when Odhiambo turned his attention to his next challenge. His scholarship to Montverde Academy gives him the opportunity to combine education with elite football development while competing in a different and highly competitive environment.
