Gor Mahia wrapped up their pre-season preparations with a 2–0 loss to Tanzanian giants Simba SC during the climax of Simba Day at a fully packed Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. The match served as the final test for the reigning FKF Premier League champions ahead of the 2025/26 season kickoff next weekend.
The Kpl record holders walked into this match short on rest and cohesion, with ten of their key players having recently been away on national duty : a large chunk of them part of the Harambee Stars squad that featured at the CHAN tournament, and seven of those also called up for the senior national team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Kenya’s match against Seychelles was played just a day before the Gor Mahia fixture, making it a real test of recovery and resilience for the returning stars.
Five players; Michael Kibwage, Sylvester Owino, Alpha Onyango, Ben Stanley, and Lewis Bandi linked up with the squad in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday Morning just hours before kickoff. Of these, Owino and Alpha had played a full 90 minutes against Seychelles, Stanley featured from the 59th minute, while Bandi and Kibwage were introduced in the 75th minute.

Despite the obvious fatigue risk, Sylvester Owino and Kibwage were handed starting berths in the heart of defence, while Stanley, Alpha, and Bandi began on the bench and were brought on in the second half.
Simba SC, in contrast, named a fully rested and foreign-heavy lineup. Only four Tanzanians; Chasambi, Mligo, Kibu, and Hamza started, and none of them had featured for the national team against Niger in their recent qualifier. Seven foreign imports started for Simba, demonstrating their enviable depth.
The match began evenly, but Simba quickly found the breakthrough in the 7th minute. A floated free-kick near the edge of the box was met by Hamza Mohammed, who headed home unmarked as the Gor Mahia defence froze and the goalkeeper remained rooted. The central duo of Owino and Kibwage showed clear signs of fatigue, and the keeper’s positioning was well below expected standards.
Gor Mahia responded with greater control of possession and pressed for an equaliser. Winger Samwel Kapen had a decent effort saved, but the front three looked disjointed. Midfield captain of the day Lawrence Juma struggled to link up play with Ghanaian new signing Adukwaw and striker Mark Shaban, leaving Gor toothless in the final third.
In a surprise move, Simba made an early substitution in the 30th minute, withdrawing goalkeeper Moussa Camara for new signing Yakoub Suleiman. Gor Mahia also made a pre-half-time change, replacing Shaban with Austin Odhiambo in the 41st minute. Gor mahia went into your break trailing by 1–0 , making the contest still an open match.
Simba doubled their lead just three minutes after the restart. Ugandan international Steven Mukwala latched onto a well-worked cross from the wing and finished clinically to make it 2–0.

In response, Gor Mahia made a triple substitution in the 53rd minute, bringing on Alpha Onyango and Fidel Origa to bolster the midfield, while Felix Oluoch replaced Chris Ochieng in attack. Lawrence Juma and Morison were also withdrawn as Charles Okonnor sought to shift momentum. Later, Bandi was introduced for Ochuoga in the 68th minute
The changes added urgency and control, and Gor Mahia dominated possession for stretches of the second half. However, despite improved midfield organisation, the record Kpl champions continued to falter in the attacking third, failing to convert their possession into clear-cut chances.
The finishing left much to be desired, Austin Odhiambo squandered a golden opportunity from a Bandi cutback, while Adukwaw forced a solid save with a well-taken effort. Chances were created, but the final touch lacked the sharpness needed to trouble the Simba defence.
Even with fresh legs introduced in the final quarter; Ben Stanley and Joshua Onyango,Gor Mahia were unable to find the target. Simba held firm and managed the game professionally, preserving their 2–0 lead to cap off their annual Simba Day celebrations in style. The day also featured squad unveilings and award ceremonies recognizing individual and club achievements from the previous season.”
