CAF Confirms Nigerian Samson Adamu as New General Secretary

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its new General Secretary following an extensive recruitment process, marking a historic milestone for Nigeria in the administration of African football.

Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the position since CAF was established in 1957. His appointment was confirmed by the CAF Executive Committee, having previously served in an acting capacity following the departure of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba.

In its official announcement, CAF said Adamu’s appointment followed an extensive and competitive recruitment process involving several candidates.

“Adamu brings extensive experience in African football administration, having joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.”

His elevation represents the culmination of a career built across sports marketing, event management and football administration.

At 44, Adamu has accumulated considerable experience in sports management, beginning outside CAF’s structures. He studied Business Management and Computer Science at the American University of Paris before enrolling in the prestigious FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, which he completed in 2009.

CAF further noted that: “A graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, Adamu brings considerable institutional knowledge and experience to his new role.”

Before joining CAF, he established himself in sports marketing through Kinetic Sport Management, where he developed and launched Copa Lagos in 2011.

The beach soccer tournament brought international teams to Nigeria and grew into a recognized event on the global beach soccer calendar. It also contributed to Nigeria’s growing involvement in the sport, with the country later hosting the 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations.

Adamu joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions, a position that placed him at the centre of organizing and managing continental football tournaments. He later became Director of Tournaments and Events, overseeing major competitions and their logistical operations.

His responsibilities involved coordinating member associations, local organizing committees, match officials, broadcasters and other stakeholders in the delivery of CAF competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations.

His experience within the continental governing body eventually saw him appointed Acting General Secretary following Mosengo-Omba’s departure, before the Executive Committee confirmed him as the substantive office holder.

Adamu is also the son of Amos Adamu, the prominent Nigerian sports administrator who previously held senior positions in Nigerian sports administration and served within CAF and FIFA structures.

His appointment places a Nigerian at the helm of CAF’s secretariat for the first time in the organisation’s nearly seven-decade history. He now takes charge of its daily administrative operations and the implementation of decisions made by its governing structures.
