Gor Mahia Maintain Winning Start, KCB Claim First Victory

Gor Mahia secured a second consecutive victory in the 2026/27 Sportpesa season with a hard fought 1- 0 win over APS Bomet at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay on Saturday, while KCB edged Mathare United by the same margin at Police Sacco Grounds.

Alpha Onyango struck four minutes before time to give the defending champions maximum points, taking their tally to 6 after an opening 4-2 victory over Murang’a Seal.

K’Ogalo faced a determined Bomet side that created several promising opportunities but lacked the finishing touch to trouble the champions on the scoreboard.

Gor started brightly, with Musa Shariff testing the Bomet defence before the visitors responded in the 10th minute. Phillip Wasai rose to meet Francis Otieno’s delivery, but goalkeeper Kevin Omondi blocked his header. Rodgers Kipkemboi collected the rebound but failed to beat the Gor custodian.

Onyango fired narrowly wide after picking up a loose ball near the edge of the box, while Dennis Omedi forced Bomet goalkeeper Maxwell Mulili into a save with a low drive following a pass from the midfielder.

Both teams continued to threaten in an entertaining first half. Brian Buletti and Frank Mandela had opportunities for Bomet, while Patrice Esombe volleyed wide for Gor after receiving a delivery from Shariff.

Ebenezer Ocran also came close for the visitors, beating a defender before unleashing a powerful effort that struck Omondi and went narrowly wide. The Gor goalkeeper later denied Wasai to ensure the teams went into the break level.

The contest remained open after the restart, with Jackson Dwang sending a looping effort over the bar for Gor. Bomet responded through Mandela, who headed wide from Omondi Francis’ delivery.

Ugandan forward Bruno Bunyaga then broke through the Gor defence, but Potiphar Odhiambo intervened to clear the danger.

Gor coach Charles Akonnor made a triple substitution around the hour mark, introducing Ben Stanley, Daniel Sakari and Enock Machaka in search of a breakthrough.

The changes nearly paid off immediately when Machaka connected with Onyango’s delivery, forcing Mulili into a save. Bunyaga subsequently came close at the other end, his curling effort drifting inches wide.

With time running out, Gor stepped up the pressure. Shariff fired narrowly wide before Buletti made a timely intervention to deny him following another pass from Onyango.

The decisive moment arrived in the 86th minute. Stanley laid the ball into Onyango’s path, and the midfielder drove a low shot from near the edge of the box beyond Mulili to settle the contest.

Bomet pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Gor held on to claim all three points.

The defeat was Bomet’s first of the campaign following their goalless draw against Mathare United, leaving them still searching for their maiden victory.

KCB edge Mathare United

KCB registered their first win of the season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Mathare United at Police Sacco Grounds.

New signing Mambote Batshi Assis scored the decisive goal to hand the Bankers maximum points and give their campaign an early lift.

Mathare, meanwhile, remain without a win after two matches, having opened their season with a goalless draw against APS Bomet.

Gor lead the way with six points from two matches, while KCB have their first victory on the board.
