Gor Mahia kept their dream of ending a 41-year wait for the CECAFA Kagame Cup title alive after edging Djibouti’s Garde République 1-0 on Wednesday night to book a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.
The Kenyan champions went into their final Group A fixture knowing victory alone would not be enough to guarantee qualification. They also required Rwandan champions APR FC to take points off Vipers SC, and the hosts delivered in dramatic fashion, coming from behind to claim a 2-1 victory that sent K’Ogalo through as Group A winners.
Having challenged his players to respond following the disappointing defeat to Vipers, head coach Charles Akonnor got exactly the reaction he wanted as Gor Mahia produced a determined display to keep their regional title ambitions firmly on course.
Akonnor reshuffled his starting line-up after the setback against Vipers, and the changes paid off almost immediately as Gor Mahia came flying out of the blocks.
The breakthrough arrived just four minutes into the contest when Patrick Essombe burst down the right flank before whipping a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Garde République goalkeeper Liban Mohamed Said failed to deal with the delivery, allowing Paul Okoth to calmly slot the loose ball into an empty net for his second goal of the tournament.
Buoyed by the early lead, Gor Mahia continued to dictate proceedings. Midfielder Enock Machaka tested the Djiboutian defence with a low drive from the edge of the area in the 15th minute before creating another chance for Okoth later in the first half, but the striker’s effort drifted wide.
K’Ogalo suffered an early setback midway through the opening period when Essombe was forced off injured following a heavy challenge. Samuel Kapen replaced the Cameroonian striker in the 24th minute as Akonnor adjusted his attacking setup.
The Kenyan champions remained the better side after the restart and should have doubled their advantage when Shariff Musa found himself with a clear sight of goal, only to fire wide from close range.
Another injury then disrupted Gor Mahia’s rhythm in the 58th minute, with substitute Samuel Kapen stretchered off and replaced by Ben Stanley Omondi.
The task became even more difficult ten minutes later when midfielder Alpha Onyango was sent off for a dangerous challenge, reducing Gor Mahia to ten men for the closing stages.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, K’Ogalo refused to buckle. Their defence stood firm under late pressure from Garde République, while Shariff Musa squandered another opportunity to put the contest beyond doubt after shooting wide from inside the box.
As the final whistle blew at Pele Stadium, Gor Mahia’s attention quickly turned to Amahoro Stadium, where APR FC staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Vipers SC 2-1. The result completed a remarkable turnaround in Group A, lifting the Kenyan champions to the summit and securing their place in the last four.
The victory kept alive the club’s quest to lift the CECAFA Kagame Cup for the first time since 1985.
With renewed confidence and momentum restored, Akonnor’s men now shift their focus to the semi-finals, where they will be just two victories away from reclaiming the regional crown.
