Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has formally challenged CECAFA’s controversial decision to downgrade Kenya’s emphatic 16-0 victory over Sudan to a 3-0 scoreline at the 2026 CECAFA U-17 Women’s Championship, with the ruling sparking widespread outrage among Kenyan fans and attracting criticism toward the regional football body.
The controversy erupted after Kenya’s Group A match against Sudan was abandoned in the 54th minute with the Junior Starlets comfortably leading 16-0. Sudan had been reduced to fewer than seven players after exhausting their substitutions, forcing the referee to stop the match in accordance with the Laws of the Game.
In a decision issued by the CECAFA Organizing Committee in Dar es Salaam on June 16, the regional body cited Article 16.4 of the tournament regulations, which states that a team abandoning a match shall forfeit it by a 3-0 scoreline. As a result, Kenya’s record victory was reduced to the standard forfeiture score.

However, the ruling has been fiercely contested by FKF, which has written to CECAFA and copied the Confederation of African Football (CAF), arguing that the Junior Starlets should not be disadvantaged by an abandonment caused by their opponents.
According to the federation, FIFA principles provide that while a forfeiting team automatically loses 3-0, the scoreline serves as the minimum sanction. If the innocent side had already established a superior result before the match was abandoned, that score should ordinarily stand.

FKF further argues that reducing Kenya’s tally from 16 goals to three has had a direct impact on the final Group A standings. The decision enabled hosts Tanzania to finish top of the group on goal difference while Kenya dropped to second place.
The matter has ignited anger among supporters, with many accusing CECAFA of denying the Junior Starlets the reward for their dominant performance. The backlash intensified after CECAFA published the final Group A standings on its social media platforms showing Tanzania in first place and Kenya second.

The post triggered a wave of criticism from Kenyan fans, who flooded the comments section demanding an explanation and calling for the reinstatement of the original scoreline. Many supporters described the decision as unjust and inconsistent with established FIFA practices, while others questioned how goals scored legitimately on the pitch could simply be erased.
With pressure mounting from both FKF and supporters, attention now shifts to CECAFA and CAF as they consider the appeal. For many Kenyans, restoring the 16-0 victory is not just about goal difference, but about safeguarding sporting integrity and ensuring teams are not punished for circumstances caused by their opponents.
