Shujaa Finish Strong in São Paulo, Secure Second Place Overall in SVNS 2

Kenya Sevens closed out their São Paulo campaign in emphatic fashion, registering two commanding victories on the final day to cap off one of their most complete performances in the HSBC SVNS Division Two series.

With qualification for the World Championship Series already secured, Shujaa stepped onto the pitch on Sunday with clarity and confidence. The result was a polished display against the United States, where Kenya powered to a 31–14 win. It was a performance built on attacking cohesion and sharp finishing, with David Nyagige crossing the try line twice while George Ooro, Chrisant Ojwang, and John Okoth each added a try to underline Kenya’s dominance.

That momentum carried into their final match against Uruguay. Once again, Shujaa controlled the tempo, executing their plays with precision to secure a 26–14 victory. George Ooro continued his influential run, with Samuel Asati, Festus Shiasi, and Chrisant Ojwang also getting on the scoresheet in a well-rounded team performance.

Across the tournament, Kenya displayed attacking fluidity and physical edge, registering big wins over Germany and Canada while pushing through tight contests. Their only setback came against Belgium, a narrow defeat that ultimately proved decisive. Despite matching the top teams in performance and results, Shujaa finished second in São Paulo on head-to-head, with Belgium claiming the leg title as the only side to beat Kenya.

That narrow margin, however, does little to take away from what has been a significant campaign. Across the three legs in Nairobi, Montevideo, and São Paulo, Kenya Sevens have shown consistency, growth, and the ability to compete at the highest level of Division Two. Their efforts see them finish second overall in the inaugural SVNS 2 standings with 50 points, just two behind series winners the United States.

More importantly, Shujaa now advance to the three-legged SVNS World Championship series, where they will face the top eight teams from the core SVNS Series. Alongside Kenya, the United States, Germany, and Uruguay have secured their places, setting the stage for a defining test in Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux in May.

For Shujaa, this is more than qualification. It is confirmation of a team that has steadily built its identity through resilience, attacking intent, and belief. From near misses in Nairobi and Montevideo to a near-perfect run in São Paulo, Kenya have taken a decisive step forward.

The challenge now shifts to the global stage, where the stakes will be higher and the opposition tougher. But on current form, Shujaa have shown they are ready to compete.
