Kenyan football heavyweights Gor Mahia FC suffered a stunning early exit from the Mozzart Bet Cup after losing 1–0 to fifth-tier outfit , regional side BB Bread FC in the Round of 32, continuing one of the most remarkable underdog stories in this year’s competition.
Coming into the match as last season’s finalists, Gor Mahia were widely expected to progress comfortably. Instead, they became the latest high-profile victim of a BB Bread side that has built a reputation for upsetting established clubs, having already eliminated AFC Leopards SC earlier in the tournament.
Gor Mahia Head coach Charles Akonnor opted to rest most of his regular starters, naming a heavily rotated lineup. Defender Frank Odhiambo was the only regular first-team player retained in the starting eleven, a decision that ultimately proved costly as the unfamiliar combination struggled to control the tempo of the game.

Although Gor Mahia had the advantage in experience and pedigree, BB Bread showed greater sharpness during key moments of the first half. Their best early opportunity arrived just before the half-hour mark when a swift transition from defence caught Gor Mahia off guard. Charles Munala delivered a cross from the left flank that found Maqbul Ochola in space, but the forward’s attempt drifted off target, allowing Gor Mahia a reprieve.
With the score still level at the break, Akonnor sought to add urgency and creativity to his side after the restart. Paul Ochuoga and Shariff Musa were introduced for Philemon Otieno and Owade in an attempt to inject pace into the attack. The adjustments briefly lifted Gor Mahia’s intensity, and they nearly found a breakthrough shortly after when Musa delivered a cross that eventually fell back to him inside the area, but his follow-up effort lacked the composure needed to trouble the goalkeeper.
As the second half progressed, Gor Mahia gradually pushed higher up the field, controlling possession and attempting to stretch the compact BB Bread defence. The introduction of striker Ebenezer Assifuah late in the game was meant to provide a finishing touch, yet clear chances remained scarce.

While Gor Mahia searched for a goal, BB Bread stayed organized and patient, waiting for the right moment to strike. That moment arrived on the 83rd Minute, A quick move down the left side saw Samuel Oluoch drive forward before delivering a low pass into the penalty area. Muthini collected the ball, shifted it onto his stronger foot, and calmly finished past the goalkeeper to give the underdogs a dramatic late lead.
The goal stunned Gor Mahia and sparked wild celebrations among the BB Bread players and Technical bench as Gor Mahia fans watched in disbelief. Despite a late push in search of an equaliser, the Sportpesa League leaders could not find a way back into the match.
Tensions spilled over after the final whistle as angry Gor Mahia supporters confronted the team outside the stadium. A group of fans gathered around the team bus demanding explanations from the players and coaching staff following the humiliating defeat. The situation grew tense enough that players were kept inside the dressing room while security personnel assessed the situation.
Police officers were later deployed to provide additional security and escort the team safely from the venue as frustrated supporters continued to vent their anger over the unexpected exit.
