Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has called for a leadership transition within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying he is better suited to steer the party forward than current leader Oburu Odinga.

Speaking amid ongoing internal discussions within the party, Babu argued that ODM requires youthful and energetic leadership to remain vibrant and politically competitive. He proposed that Oburu steps back from active leadership and instead serves the party in a trustee capacity.

“Oburu should leave the party to young people like Babu Owino and him to be the trustee. I over-qualify to be a party leader. He should be in the party, I agree, but as a trustee,” he said.

The legislator pointed to his recent Linda Mwananchi tours and grassroots mobilisation efforts as evidence of his readiness to lead. According to him, the strong turnout at his rallies demonstrates growing support and the need for renewed momentum within the party.

“We need that young energy. Look at what we are doing in this country, without even proper notice, we are already holding rallies that are carrying thousands and thousands of people,” he added.

Babu also linked his leadership ambitions to the enduring political influence of ODM party leader Raila Odinga, popularly known as Baba. He said the ideals associated with Raila’s politics continue to inspire supporters, arguing that younger leaders are well-positioned to carry that legacy forward.

“People believe in that spirit of Baba, the Babaism,” he said.

At the same time, the MP warned that internal wrangles within ODM risk weakening the party if not addressed promptly. He called for the urgent convening of a National Delegates Conference (NDC) to resolve the leadership stalemate and provide a clear direction for the party.

“That is why some of us in the Linda Wananchi saw that there is confusion in the house within the Linda Ground team and we said that the only thing that can break this deadlock is an NDC called by the current secretary general with an audited list of delegates so that we can move this party in the right direction,” Babu stated.

He maintained that generational transition is both inevitable and necessary for ODM’s continued survival, stressing that while senior figures should remain as advisors and custodians of the party’s values, young leaders must be given the opportunity to take charge.
