The Greenpark Terminus Pedestrian Underpass at the Haile Selassie–Uhuru Highway roundabout is nearing completion, with progress currently at 97 per cent, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has confirmed.
On Thursday, the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure toured the site, hailing the KSh 2 billion project as a major boost to easing congestion and improving safety in the capital.
Funded through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund, the underpass is being built by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the supervision of Civil One Consulting Engineers Ltd.
The 500-metre underground walkway will provide a safe and efficient crossing for pedestrians connecting Mombasa Road, Upper Hill, Westlands, and the Nairobi Railway Terminus, strengthening the city’s transport network.
Modern Features
The underpass is equipped with:
- Seven standby generators and a drainage pump to address power and flooding risks.
- CCTV surveillance and a police post to guarantee safety.
- Elevators for persons with disabilities, the elderly, and expectant mothers.
- 39 shops, billboards, and rental spaces to generate revenue for maintenance.
According to KeNHA, the pending works include installation of elevators, electrical and mechanical systems, CCTV, interior finishes, landscaping, and utility connections.
Expected Impact
Once operational, the facility is projected to:
- Improve pedestrian safety at one of Nairobi’s busiest junctions, which sees more than 21,000 users daily.
- Reduce conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians, cutting travel times and boosting transport efficiency.
- Open new commercial opportunities through rental spaces within the underpass.
The Greenpark project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize Nairobi’s transport system and enhance safety for non-motorised road users.
