The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has named 107 bars, clubs, and restaurants across Kenya that could face closure for violating noise pollution regulations.

In a notice issued yesterday, NEMA said it has been inundated with complaints from the public about loud music from entertainment joints, particularly in major urban centres. The crackdown aims to curb rising noise pollution, which has disrupted residential communities.

“NEMA has been receiving noise pollution complaints regarding clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants across the country. Several facilities have been issued Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to provide environmental compliance documents, but the majority have failed to comply,” the notice read.

The authority said noise-related complaints have risen by 15% in the past year, especially in Nairobi and Mombasa.

Among the popular establishments on the list are Quiver Lounge (Eastlands and Kilimani), 1824, Paris Lounge Lang’ata, Cool Breeze Bar Ruiru, Havana Lounge along Northern Bypass, Al Fakher, Kettle House, Bar Next Door, Airport Club, O.J Club Ruiru, Ibury Lounge, and Club Ibiza.

Restaurants and eateries were not spared, with Alaska Lounge and Grill, Funcity Hotel, Mchana Restaurant, Kijito Gardens, and Mamba Village also flagged.

NEMA has given the listed operators seven days to submit key compliance documents, including: Certificate of Incorporation and list of directors, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license, Current Environmental Audit report, Proof of noise control measures and written explanation on why they should not face legal action or closure

The authority warned that failure to comply within the deadline would result in prosecution, closure of the premises, and other legal action.

The crackdown coincides with preparations for World Cleanup Day 2025, with NEMA intensifying campaigns against environmental hazards such as textile waste and noise pollution.
