Harry Kane has reached the summit of individual football recognition after winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or, capping a remarkable season in which his goalscoring exploits powered Bayern Munich to domestic silverware and helped England achieve their best World Cup finish in six decades.
The 33-year-old England captain received the prestigious award at a ceremony at the London Palladium on Monday, ending a 25-year wait for an English winner. Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen was the last Englishman to claim the prize in 2001.
Kane’s victory followed a phenomenal 2025/26 campaign in which he scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country. His tally included 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern, underlining his importance to the German giants.
The striker scored 36 Bundesliga goals to finish as the league’s leading marksman for the third consecutive season. He also delivered 14 goals in 13 Champions League appearances, helping Bayern reach the semi-finals, while his 10 goals in the German Cup included a hat-trick in the final against Stuttgart.
Those performances helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal, completing a domestic double under coach Vincent Kompany. Kane also lifted the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, adding another medal to a season that firmly established him among Europe’s most prolific forwards.
His influence extended to the international stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kane scored six goals as England finished third, their best showing in 28 . The achievement provided a significant milestone to build on for the Three Lions, who had gone six decades without matching their maiden World Cup triumph.
Kane’s award also ended the long wait for a Bundesliga-based player to win the Ballon d’Or. He became the first player from Germany’s top flight to claim the honour since Borussia Dortmund’s Matthias Sammer in 1996.
He beat strong competition from France forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal. Kane also collected the Gerd Müller Trophy for the world’s best men’s goalscorer, recognizing his extraordinary scoring record.
In his acceptance speech, Kane credited his teammates, coaches and family for helping him reach the pinnacle of the game. He also reflected on a career shaped by loan spells and setbacks before becoming one of football’s most feared strikers narrating the journey from Tottenham Hotspurs to Bayern.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony also recognized outstanding performers in both men’s and women’s football. Harry Kane won the men’s Ballon d’Or and the Men’s Striker of the Year award, while Alexia Putellas claimed the Women’s Ballon d’Or. Lamine Yamal and Vicky López were named Men’s and Women’s Young Talent of the Year, respectively, while Unai Simón and Cata Coll took the men’s and women’s goalkeeper awards. Spain’s Luis de la Fuente and Pere Romeu received the men’s and women’s Coach of the Year awards, respectively. Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona were named Men’s and Women’s Club of the Year, while Mexico’s Charlyn Corral won the Women’s Striker of the Year award.
Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka received the Sócrates Award in recognition of his humanitarian work, including helping children access life-changing medical treatment through big shoe charity . His efforts have supported children in Nigeria and other African countries.
