FKF Suspends League Matches in Honour of Raila Odinga

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced the suspension of all league fixtures following the government’s declaration of a seven-day National Mourning period in honour of the late former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga.

The suspension came just after Wednesday’s (yesterday) round of SportPesa League matches , which delivered drama and turning points across the country. Kakamega Homeboyz cruised past Bidco United 3–1 in Bukhungu, while Posta Rangers stunned Shabana FC 2–1 at the Gusii Stadium , a venue long considered a fortress and one of the toughest for visiting teams ; ending the Kisii-based side’s unbeaten run while extending their own perfect start to the season. Sofapaka finally registered their first win of the campaign after a 2–1 victory away to Murang’a Seal, signaling possible revival for the Batoto ba Mungu.

In Nairobi at Misc Kasarani, AFC Leopards were once again left frustrated after being held to a 0–0 draw by Bandari FC. The result marked a third successive stalemate for Ingwe, piling pressure on the team as tempers flared at full-time. Angry fans demanded audience with the club’s management, technical bench, and players, a sign of growing unrest in the blue and white camp as the hunt for a first league win continues.

In an official statement, FKF confirmed that all upcoming fixtures have been put on hold in compliance with the government directive to honour the memory of the departed national icon.

“Following the Government’s declaration of seven days of National Mourning in honour of the late former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended all league fixtures scheduled during this period,” the statement read in part.

The federation also joined the nation in mourning, describing Raila Odinga as a great leader, patriot, and passionate supporter of Kenyan football whose legacy and influence extended far beyond politics, He was an ardent supporter of local giants Gor Mahia FC, where he served as Patron, and a passionate follower of the national team, Harambee Stars. He never missed a Stars match, with his last public appearance coming just two months ago during the CHAN tournament.

“FKF joins the nation in mourning a great leader, patriot, and lover of the beautiful game. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and supporters during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.
