Dala 7s Returns: Kisumu Gears Up for National 7s Circuit Grand Finale

The lakeside city of Kisumu is abuzz with anticipation as it prepares to host the Grand Finale of the 2025 National 7s Circuit,Dala Sevens on the 13th and 14th of September at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, Mamboleo. 32 teams from across the country are expected to descend on the city for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to Kenya’s premier rugby sevens campaign.

Dala Sevens, a staple in Kenya’s rugby calendar, is more than just a tournament—it’s a homecoming. The name “Dala,” which means “home” in the Luo language, perfectly captures the spirit of the event. The Western region of Kenya, including Kisumu, has long been a cradle of rugby talent. Dala 7s is a celebration of that heritage, drawing fans and players from every corner of the country back to where the sport’s roots run deep.

First held in 2003, the Dala 7s has grown in stature to become one of the most anticipated legs of the National Sevens Circuit. Hosted by Kisumu RFC, the tournament has attracted massive crowds over the years. The 2025 edition is expected to draw nearly 10,000 spectators to the Mamboleo grounds, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most vibrant fixtures on the rugby calendar.

Kisumu County Governor, Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, welcomed the Kisumu RFC Secretariat for a courtesy call ahead of the event and affirmed the county’s full commitment to ensuring a seamless and secure tournament.

“We remain focused on enabling growth for our youth – the talented and the determined! Kisumu is all set to host this year’s edition of the popular Dala Sevens Rugby Tournament which attracts all and sundry from across Kenya and beyond,” said Governor Nyong’o. “We guarantee our full support as a County and commit to liaise with the National Government to ensure enhanced security and safety for all. To all rugby lovers and residents of Kisumu: TWENDE DALA 7s for fun and entertainment.”

Echoing the Governor’s sentiments, Kisumu County Minister for Sports, Culture, Gender & Youth Affairs, Madam Beatrice Wadiaga, expressed confidence in the city’s preparedness.

“Kisumu is ready to shine as we host the much-anticipated Dala 7s Rugby Series. We expect nearly 10,000 supporters cheering for 32 elite teams, including our own Kisumu RFC,” she noted. “We pledged full county support and stronger partnerships while committing to work closely with the National Government to guarantee security and ensure the Dala 7s is a resounding success.”

Last year, Kabras Sugar claimed their first Dala 7s crown in emphatic style, overpowering their Rai Group rivals, Menengai Oilers, with a 24-5 victory in the final. Kabras added their name to an illustrious roll of honour that includes the likes of KCB Rugby, Mwamba, Homeboyz, and Kenya Harlequin.
