FKF Leadership Showdown Looms as Hussein Calls NEC Meeting After Weekend SGM

The leadership crisis at the Football Kenya Federation is heading into a defining weekend, with President Hussein Mohammed convening a National Executive Committee meeting for November 8, a day after a Special General Meeting scheduled for November 7 in Meru.

The back to back meetings come amid deepening divisions within the federation, particularly between Hussein and his deputy, McDonald Mariga, whose differences over the management and accountability of FKF have increasingly threatened the stability of its top leadership.

The SGM, which is expected to bring together 91 delegates representing FKF members, will deliberate on the conduct of the 7 NEC officials accused of defying the federation’s leadership. Those facing scrutiny include FKF Vice President Mc Donald Mariga, Women’s Representative Kerubo Momanyi, Nyanza NEC Member Collins Kale, Coast NEC Member Gabriel Mghendi, Upper Rift Valley NEC Member Bernard Lagat, Nairobi NEC Member Dan Shikanda and Central NEC Member Robert Macharia.

The meeting could have significant implications for the composition of the federation’s executive, with the FKF Constitution requiring a two-thirds majority of delegates present to approve the removal of NEC members. Should the seven officials be removed, the constitution provides for a fresh General Assembly within 60 days to elect replacements.

The tension has also played out through competing attempts to convene NEC code meetings. Mariga had called a separate meeting for November 4, with his proposed agenda including a social media publication by a blogger and a wire-service journalist containing allegations of corruption.

However, the proposed meeting ran into procedural objections, with FIFA questioning whether the process used to convene it complied with Article 38 of the FKF Constitution. The world governing body subsequently called for the meeting to be cancelled, citing concerns over the validity of the original request and the withdrawal of support by two NEC members who had initially backed it.

Hussein’s November 8 meeting, scheduled to take place in Nairobi, will address a wide range of administrative, financial and technical matters. Among the key items are compliance with court orders concerning the position of Acting Secretary General/CEO, leagues and competitions, policy approvals and national team calendars.

The agenda also includes the proposed FKF Technical Centre, audited financial statements, the federation’s 2026/2027 budget, constitutional amendments and matters relating to national team coaches.

The meeting is also expected to consider a proposal concerning the possible suspension of an unidentified NEC member, adding another potentially contentious issue to an already packed agenda.

The sequence of events means the resolutions reached in Meru could have a direct bearing on Sunday’s NEC proceedings, particularly if the composition of the executive changes or the meeting’s ability to secure the required quorum is affected.

With FIFA having already expressed concern over the federation’s governance disputes, the weekend meetings offer an important opportunity for FKF members to address the divisions through established constitutional mechanisms.

Whether the SGM provides a pathway towards reconciliation or deepens the existing divisions, the decisions made over the two days could shape the direction of Kenyan football administration in the months ahead.
