NSL Clubs Demand Meeting With FKF President Before New Season, Form Structured Caucus

National Super League (NSL) clubs have asked Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed to hold a consultative meeting with them before the commencement of the 2026/2027 season, insisting that dialogue is necessary to address issues affecting the second-tier league.

In a letter to Mohammed on Thursday, October 15, the clubs said they had reached a collective resolution that the new season should not begin before they meet the FKF president.

“Following consultations among NSL teams, a collective resolution has been reached that the 2026/2027 NSL season should not commence before a meeting is held between the teams and yourself,” the letter states.

The clubs proposed discussions on the review of the 2025/2026 season, sponsorship opportunities and expectations for the upcoming campaign, expressing hope that the engagement would strengthen relations between the federation and participating teams.

“We wish to emphasize that this request is made in a spirit of partnership and constructive engagement. Our intention is not to create an impasse or hinder the progress of the league, but rather to strengthen the relationship between the Federation and the clubs while ensuring that the new season begins on a positive and united footing,” the letter adds.

The clubs asked the FKF president to provide a suitable date, time and venue for the meeting, saying open dialogue would allow both sides to address matters of mutual interest and agree on a way forward.

The push for talks was followed by a lengthy meeting at Weston Hotel in Nairobi on Thursday, where NSL clubs moved to strengthen their caucus by electing officials and establishing committees to coordinate their common interests.

The clubs met FKF representatives earlier in the morning before continuing their discussions at the hotel until 5 p.m., resolving to formalise the caucus and establish a more structured platform for engaging the federation.

Swaleh Yusuf retained the chairperson position, pending a decision on whether Darajani Gogo will retain its NSL status. Edwin Ayiro of Soy United was elected vice-chairperson, while Evans Fungututi of Nzoia Sugar became organizing secretary. Nicholas Ochieng of Kisumu All Stars was appointed caucus secretary.

Four committees were established: Administration and Coordination; Marketing and Communications; Finance and Welfare; and Teams Relations and Arbitration. The committees are expected to coordinate the caucus’s activities and help implement resolutions reached by the clubs.

Sponsorship emerged as one of the key priorities, with clubs agreeing to explore joint proposals that could attract partners to the league and its participating teams. Through a collective approach, the caucus hopes to present the NSL as a more attractive commercial proposition instead of leaving clubs to pursue sponsorship independently.

The clubs also resolved to work together to grow their social media audiences and establish dedicated NSL caucus pages to promote team activities, increase visibility and improve their appeal to potential sponsors.

On refereeing, the caucus plans to establish an internal complaints unit to document concerns about consistently poor-performing match officials and forward complaints directly to FKF for action. The proposed unit would provide clubs with a coordinated channel for raising officiating concerns.

Club licensing was another major concern, with the teams urging FKF to consider the financial realities facing clubs, many of which are struggling to remain operational. They called for a phased approach to licensing requirements that would take account of the challenges facing NSL participants.

The clubs further agreed to formalise the caucus’s governing rules and regulations before putting the committees into operation, a move intended to clarify responsibilities and establish a stronger organisational framework.
