Sharks Face Must-Win Return Leg as Mombasa United Defend Lead – All Permutations

Kariobangi Sharks have 90 minutes to rescue their decade-long top-flight status when they face Mombasa United in the decisive second leg of the FKF Premier League promotion and relegation playoff this afternoon at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Kick-off is at 3pm, with Mombasa United holding a narrow advantage from last Thursday’s first leg at Mbaraki Sports Club. The aggregate winner will claim the final place in the 18-team 2026/27 FKF Premier League, while the loser will drop into the National Super League.

The permutations are governed by the 2019 FKF Rules and Regulations, which provide for the promotion and relegation playoff to be played over two legs.

Under Regulation 2.9.3.1, the team with the greater number of aggregate goals after the two matches is declared the winner. Should the aggregate score be level, Regulation 2.9.3.2 provides for the away-goal rule, with the team that has scored the greater number of away goals advancing.

That provision gives Sharks an important advantage heading into the return leg. Having found the net away from home in Mombasa, Sharks hold the favourable away-goal position should the overall aggregate be level at the end of the two matches.

If the teams remain inseparable after the aggregate and away-goal criteria have been applied, Regulation 2.9.3.3 provides for kicks from the penalty mark to determine the winner. The regulations also provide for a coin toss where time does not allow the penalty kicks, or their continuation, to take place.

The framework makes the opening goal significant, but the overall objective for Sharks is to overturn the first-leg disadvantage and finish the tie ahead under the applicable regulations. Mombasa United, meanwhile, need to protect their advantage and avoid being overtaken on aggregate or the relevant tie-breaker.

The first leg appeared to be slipping away from Sharks after Mombasa United established a two-goal cushion, but Wayne Dalvine Otieno’s late strike changed the complexion of the contest and gave the Nairobi side a crucial lifeline going into the return match.

William Muluya’s team will look to build on that response as they fight to preserve a Premier League status they have held since earning promotion in 2016.

Mombasa United are equally within touching distance of a historic achievement. Abdulhamid Moallin’s side have already demonstrated their ability to compete with an established top-flight opponent and will be determined to complete the job in Nairobi.

The coastal side, however, cannot afford complacency with the playoff still subject to the aggregate, away-goal and penalty provisions stipulated in the 2019 regulations.

The playoff is the sporting conclusion to weeks of legal and administrative uncertainty surrounding the composition of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League. The dispute centred on whether the 2019 framework, which provided for a promotion and relegation playoff, or the revised 2025 regulations should determine the final league position.

With the two clubs now contesting the playoff over two legs, the matter will ultimately be settled on the pitch.

Ninety minutes at Ulinzi Sports Complex will determine whether Sharks extend their Premier League journey into an 11th consecutive season or Mombasa United complete a historic promotion to Kenya’s top flight.
