Sharks’ Decade-Long Premier League Journey Faces Biggest Test Yet in Mombasa

Kariobangi Sharks’ remarkable decade-long journey in Kenya’s top flight reaches a defining moment this afternoon when they face Mombasa United in the first leg of the FKF Premier League promotion/relegation playoff at Mbaraki Sports Club.

Kick-off is set for 2pm, with the aggregate winner over the two legs earning the final place in the 18-team 2026/27 Premier League, while the loser will compete in the National Super League. The return leg is scheduled for October 6 in Nairobi.

The playoff brings a sporting climax to a dispute that has held Kenyan football in suspense for weeks, with court battles, conflicting orders and disagreements over promotion and relegation rules forcing the new league season to remain on hold.

A mediation process initiated by FKF eventually produced a breakthrough, allowing the playoff to proceed with both clubs permitted to field their newly registered players. The agreement finally moved the dispute from the corridors of the courts and federation offices to the football pitch.

For Sharks, however, the stakes are deeply personal.

The Nairobi-based club earned promotion to the top flight in 2016 after finishing second behind Nzoia United in the National Super League, making their Premier League debut in the 2017 season. Since then, Sharks have established themselves as one of the most consistent clubs in the Kenyan top flight.

Their decade-long stay has been built around youth development, with the club producing players who have gone on to feature for Harambee Stars. Duke Abuya and Eric Kapaito are among the notable graduates, while coach William Muluya has become the longest-serving tactician in the club’s history.

Sharks have also experienced continental football and domestic success during their top-flight journey. Now, that remarkable run faces its biggest test.

The club finished 16th in the previous Premier League campaign and became embroiled in the promotion and relegation dispute after questions emerged over the regulations governing the 2026/27 season. Mombasa United, who finished third in the NSL, had been pushing for promotion under the revised framework.

The agreement to settle the matter through a playoff has now placed the two clubs directly against each other, with 180 minutes separating one from Premier League survival and the other from top-flight promotion.

“We respect Mombasa United because they have earned their position,” Muluya said.

Acknowledging the challenge while calling for concentration and discipline across both legs.

Mombasa United will have home advantage in the opening encounter and have strengthened their squad during preparations for a possible Premier League campaign. More than 15 new players have been brought in, with the agreement allowing them to feature in the playoff.

Coach Abdulhamid Moallin has urged his players to focus on the football despite the pressure surrounding the contest, while recognizing the experience Sharks bring into the decisive tie.
