DCI Rules Out Foul Play in Death of Former MP Cyrus Jirongo

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed claims of foul play in the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, confirming that his demise resulted from a road traffic accident.

In a statement issued on Monday, the DCI said it conducted extensive investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death, including interrogations of close associates and individuals who interacted with him shortly before the incident.

Jirongo, 64, died in the early hours of December 13, 2025, after his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Climax Coach bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. He was reportedly driving to his rural home in Lugari at the time of the crash.

Investigators recorded statements from several key witnesses, including his wife Ann Lanoi Pertet, the bus driver Tiras Kamau Githinji, the bus conductor Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi, and staff at Eagol Petrol Station, where Jirongo’s vehicle was captured on CCTV making a U-turn shortly before the accident.

In addition, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and politicians Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli who were among the last people seen with Jirongo at Karen Oasis restaurant on December 12, 2025 voluntarily recorded statements to assist the probe.

“Further, seven passengers from the ill-fated bus presented themselves to assist in the investigation, and their statements were also recorded,” the DCI said.

A multi-agency team also visited and processed the crash scene, secured and preserved exhibits, documented physical evidence, and retrieved CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station for forensic review. The bus manifest and amateur video footage from the scene were similarly analysed.

Based on the findings, investigators concluded that the incident was a traffic accident, with no evidence suggesting criminal involvement or foul play.

The DCI said the investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for appropriate action once the remaining procedural processes are completed.

Jirongo was laid to rest on December 30, 2025, at his family homestead in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, alongside his parents.

Meanwhile, the DCI urged members of the public and political leaders to avoid speculation, warning that unverified claims could undermine investigations and cause unnecessary public anxiety.
