The 2026 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit came alive at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi on Saturday as the 37th edition of the Kabeberi 7s got underway following a two-week break.
The third leg of the six-tournament circuit brought together teams eager to build on their performances at the opening Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru and Dala 7s in Kisumu, setting the stage for another competitive weekend of sevens rugby.
Day One produced an entertaining mix of dominant displays, close encounters and crucial results as teams battled for places in the Main Cup quarter-finals.
Kenya Harlequin enjoyed a strong outing in Pool A, winning all three of their matches. They opened with a 36–7 victory over Kisumu RFC, followed it with a 35–5 win against Impala RFC and completed their perfect run by beating Daystar Falcons 19–7.
Daystar still secured their place in the last eight after earlier victories over Impala and Kisumu.
Pool B provided some of the day’s most competitive encounters. Mwamba RFC began with a narrow 22–21 victory over Nondescripts before beating Catholic Monks 35–7. Strathmore Leos, meanwhile, drew 24–24 with Nondescripts before ending the group stage with a 29–12 win over Mwamba. Both Mwamba and Strathmore progressed to the knockout phase.
Menengai Oilers were among the day’s standout performers in Pool C, winning all three matches. They defeated KU Blak Blad 29–7, MSC Rugby 32–5 and Zetech Oaks 38–14.
KU Blak Blad joined the Oilers in the quarter-finals after recording victories over Zetech Oaks and MSC Rugby.
Pool D, widely regarded as the “Group of Death”, lived up to expectations with plenty of action. KCB Rugby opened with a 28–0 victory over Nakuru RFC and followed it with a 29–14 win against MMUST. Kabras Sugar also recorded wins over MMUST and Nakuru before the two sides met in the final pool match.
KCB edged Kabras 12–7 to finish the group stage unbeaten, while Kabras advanced alongside them after securing two victories.
With the group stage complete, eight teams now remain in contention for the Kabeberi 7s Main Cup.
