Sportpesa League champions and 3 time Cecafa winners Gor Mahia Fc moved within one win of ending a 41-year wait for regional glory after defeating Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman 8-7 on penalties to book a place in the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup final, their first appearance in the regional showpiece since 2015.
The thrilling semi-final at Kigali Pele Stadium ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, with the Kenyan champions holding their nerve in a marathon shootout to eliminate one of the tournament favourites and continue an impressive run under new head coach Charles Akonnor.
Having topped Group A after a commanding 5-0 victory over APR FC, a narrow 1-0 defeat to Vipers SC and a hard-fought 1-0 win over Garde République, Gor Mahia entered the semi-final full of confidence despite missing suspended midfielder Alpha Onyango and injured forward Patrick Essombe. Akonnor largely retained the side that dismantled APR in the opening match, with Shariff Musa coming into the starting line-up as the only notable change.
K’Ogalo began brightly and deservedly broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when sustained pressure inside the Al Hilal penalty area forced defender Steven Ebuela to divert the ball into his own net. The lead, however, lasted only ten minutes as Ansumana Samura equalized for the Sudanese side before halftime, setting up an intriguing second half.
Neither side managed to find a decisive breakthrough after the restart despite creating promising opportunities. Akonnor freshened his side by introducing Ben Stanley Omondi and David Ochuoga, with Daniel Sakari switching to left-back, before later bringing on Jackson Dwang, Ebenezer Assifuah and Ebenezer Adukwaw as Gor Mahia used all five substitutions in search of a winner.
K’Ogalo came agonisingly close to sealing victory in stoppage time when Lesley Otieno’s effort drifted narrowly wide, forcing the contest into extra time. Their task became even tougher when substitute Jackson Dwang was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, leaving the Kenyan champions to play the closing stages with ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Gor Mahia defended resolutely and denied Al Hilal any clear opportunities, ensuring the semi-final would be settled from the penalty spot.
The shootout proved every bit as dramatic as the match itself. Daniel Sakari missed Gor Mahia’s opening penalty to hand Al Hilal the initiative, but goalkeeper Bryne Omondi produced a crucial save to keep K’Ogalo alive. Lesley Otieno also failed to convert during sudden death, yet Al Hilal could not take advantage as they missed two more penalties, allowing Gor Mahia to seal a memorable 8-7 victory and spark jubilant celebrations among the travelling supporters and the Technical bench.
The result capped another impressive display by Akonnor’s rebuilt squad, whose blend of experienced campaigners and new signings has steadily improved throughout the tournament. Paul Okoth, Enock Machaka, Lesley Otieno and Daniel Sakari have all made important contributions since arriving at the club, while the team’s resilience has become one of its defining qualities.
Gor Mahia will now face hosts Rayon Sports in Friday’s final at Amahoro Stadium after the Rwandan champions defeated South Sudan’s surprise package Jamus SC 3-1 in the second semi-final. The encounter will carry added motivation for K’Ogalo, who suffered a 2-0 defeat to Rayon Sports during the Rayon Day invitational friendly less than two weeks ago. This time, however, the CECAFA Kagame Cup trophy will be at stake.
Victory on Friday would see Gor Mahia reclaim the regional crown for the first time since 1985, ending a 41-year wait for the title while handing Charles Akonnor silverware in his first tournament in charge. The champions will also pocket US$30,000 (approximately Ksh. 3.87 million), with the runners-up receiving US$20,000 (approximately Ksh. 2.58 million).
