Shujaa Fall to Australia in Hong Kong Opener, Turn Focus to New Zealand Clash

Kenya Sevens’ push for promotion to the top tier of the HSBC SVNS 1 began with a 14–5 defeat to Australia in their opening Pool C match at Hong Kong.

Having secured their place in this World Championship promotion tournament after a strong HSBC SVNS 2 campaign, Shujaa arrived in Hong Kong aiming to break back into the elite HSBC SVNS 1 level. However, they were immediately tested by a sharp and clinical Australian side.

Australia took control early, with Josh Turner finishing off a move initiated by Ben Dowling to open the scoring. They continued to dictate the tempo, stretching Kenya’s defense before James Turner sliced through on the left to give the Aussies a 14–0 lead at halftime.

Shujaa responded with intent after the break. From the restart, Vincent Onyala showed quick reactions to win possession and release Denis Abukuse, who sprinted through for Kenya’s only try of the match. The missed conversion left the score at 14–5, keeping Shujaa within reach but still chasing the game.

Despite a more energetic second half display, Kenya could not find another breakthrough as Australia held firm to close out the win. The result highlighted the narrow margins at this level, where small errors are quickly punished.

With the tournament serving as a gateway to HSBC SVNS 1 next season, every result carries added weight. Shujaa must now shift focus quickly to their next Pool C fixture against New Zealand from 3.47 EAT, knowing a strong response is essential to keep their promotion hopes alive.

Having worked their way back to this stage, Kenya will be determined to bounce back and stay in contention as the battle for a place among the world’s elite intensifies.
